New Season, New Standards: 2025–2026 KEF Dressage Rule Updates

As the 2025–2026 dressage season kicks off, the Kuwait Equestrian Federation (KEF) has introduced several important updates to its national dressage rules and regulations. These changes aim to refine the competitive structure, enhance horse and rider welfare, and align local standards more closely with international best practices.

Whether you’re a seasoned rider, a trainer, or a new competitor, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the latest updates before stepping into the arena.

Key Changes This Season:

1. Clearer Progression Through Levels

KEF now offers nine national dressage levels, from Basic (B) up to Advanced Heavy (AH), with structured criteria to ensure fair progression. Riders must accumulate qualifying points at each level before advancing. Once a combination exceeds ten points in a level, they are required to move up.

2. Young Horse Participation Rules

The minimum age for horses has been clarified: horses must be at least four years old to compete in lower levels, with higher levels requiring older horses. The aim is to protect young horses and promote ethical training practices.

3. New Test Selection Format

For each level (except Training Level), two tests will be designated per competition. Riders can choose to perform one or both tests, but may not repeat the same test within the same competition. If no test is specified on the entry form, the organizing committee will select it.

4. Horse & Rider Combinations

A more detailed framework now governs how many tests and levels a horse or rider can participate in. These include limits on the number of horses per rider and how many times a horse can be ridden per day — all designed to ensure welfare and fairness.

5. Updated Points & Qualification System

Points are awarded starting from a 60% score (one point), scaling up to four points for a 70%+ score. Riders scoring less than 56% in two consecutive tests at the same level will be required to step down to a lower level.

6. Prize Eligibility Rules

Only riders scoring above 60% are eligible for prize-giving. Ties will now be broken based on collective marks, and prize-giving ceremonies are mandatory for winners unless excused by the Ground Jury.

7. Stricter Equipment & Conduct Enforcement

The updated rules include specific guidelines for both rider and horse equipment, and violations such as incorrect tack, unauthorized assistance, or late arrivals can now lead to immediate disqualification or elimination.

This season’s changes are a significant step toward raising the overall standard of dressage in Kuwait. They reinforce fairness, promote progressive development, and most importantly, protect the well-being of our equine partners.
